10 UNDER 10K; Vancouver Based Female Content Creators

Picture

With International Women’s Day just around the corner I wanted to take the opportunity to feature some of the leading ladies in my life doing cool shit. Anyone following me on Insta knows that I am forever hyping up my friends on Instagram Stories because I am so proud of my friends for being the kind of people I looked up to when I was younger. Honestly when I started compiling this list it was WAY too long for a blog post so I decided to narrow it down to my content creating friends who are also content creators with less than 10k followers on Insta that I think are worth following!

Here are a few of my female-identifying pals you should check out, follow and devour their content like I do.

@GIRLLOVESGLOSS

beauty & motherhood

If there is any proof that moms are superheroes it’s Jaime.

While her content is primarily beauty, she does sprinkle in a dose of the realities of being a stay-at-home mom often. Her daughter, Everly, makes the occasional appearance on the feed and in Stories however the reliability is more than just “I’m a mom and I can be a digital content creator too.” It’s also “I’m a mom and sometimes my kid can hurt my feelings” and “I’m a mom that also creates content outside of being a mom.”

Her beauty flat lays have me constantly lusting for the newest things in cosmetics and her reviews pack no punches. She’s not afraid of being removed from PR lists by calling out poor performing products.

She posts so consistently than she’s my benchmark of how often I would like to be posting.

@MODERNMIXVAN

lifestyle & marketing

In an industry where so many people never divulge the work put into anything front facing, be a Vanessa.

Vanessa is a marketing maven who uses her platform to share deets about her life as a freelance marketing creative and doesn’t shy away from putting in the work. Not only is her content consistent but it’s informative. I know that I am a better writer and content creator for knowing Vanessa.

She’s also a testament to how Instagram isn’t about the quantity of followers as opposed to the quality. Her posts continue to have higher engagement than other influencers I follow with tens of thousands of followers because of how genuine Vanessa is.

Also she has a super cute pup so you should follow along to see Teddy.

A post shared by Marta Djordjevic (@marta.mcfly) on Dec 10, 2019 at 7:05am PST

@MARTA.MCFLY

travel & fashion & music & film (she does it all)

We all joke about packing up our shit and traveling the world with some hottie, but Marta’s boyfriend actually did it.

All jokes aside, Marta and I have known one another for a very long time. We first met interning together in fashion school to eventually becoming neighbours and even co-workers at one point. I’ve been lucky enough to see Marta and her content grow so much in the past few years and lately her content is second to none as she lives abroad for a year.

Her vivid film photography paired with her love of all things Quentin Tarantino makes her cool as fuck. Legit, if I didn’t know her already I would tell myself that she was way too fucking cool to be friends with me, a peasant.

@GREWALLEAH

fashion & lifestyle

Every time I look at a photo of Leah it confirms that God has favourites because people get to walk around and just look this good.

The marketing genius behind Kara Yoo, Leah knows a thing or to about creating engaging content. A lot of the the Kara Yoo photos are styled and taken by Leah which showcases her talents behind the camera.

When I first met Leah via Kara Yoo I remember walking away from our first interaction and thinking “that girl has got to be a model. Look at her.” Turns out I was right and she also models with Stranger Agency so she’s also amazing in front of a camera.

And she has dope style.

See, God does have favourites.

A post shared by Vancouver Vogue â–¡ Britta Bisig (@vancouver_vogue) on Dec 31, 2019 at 2:38am PST

@VANCOUVER_VOGUE

beauty & lifestyle

For a little bit of sparkle just add Britta to your feed.

Britta was one of the first content creators I met when I was first getting started and she has always been consistent in the best ways possible. She knows who she is and understands better than most how important it is to be kind.

Not saying this to shade anyone, but Britta has treated me the same when I was at less than a thousand followers, when I got my first paid writing opportunity to when I got my first paid travel opportunity. Nothing about her has ever come off as competitive, jealous or catty and I consider myself lucky to consider Britta a friend.

I also think she might be my fairy godmother because the last two times I ran into her accidentally it was right after a tough break up and right after I just lost my job and both times she cleared her evening to spend her time with me.

ALSO, how cute is she?

@ALLEYOSBORN

photography & travel

Alley Osborn is the little sister of one of my best friends but is also my go to for moody travel pics.

A photographer based out of North Vancouver, her photos are edited to perfection showcasing not only composition but her effortless cool vintage aesthetic. Alley’s photos will have your ready to pack your bags to explore the globe.

Plus she’s really sweet and can play the ukulele, she’s like the manic pixie dream girl but for an indie romance film.

@ALEESHA_H

beauty & fashion

Aleesha Harris makes me want to be a better blazer wearer.

Not only does she look bomb in every photo she takes she also runs her Instagram account while running a blog AND being the arts and lifestyle editor of The Vancouver Sun and The Province. Talk about a goal getter. Like I literally only two of those things and she still does those two more consistently than I do.

Her pics are oh-so-dreamy and her writing is second to none (seriously, I wish I could write the way she does.)

@KELSEY_TRIES

lifestyle & wellness & tik tok advocate

Are you ready to laugh?

I don’t have to do a lot of convincing to get you to follow Kelsey on IG: go to her profile, watch one of her Tik Tok Thursday highlights and the next thing you know you’ll be in stitches.

Not only is Kelsey insanely funny her commentary on pop and Gen Z culture somehow manages to give you a glimpse of what’s hip with the kids nowadays without making you feel a million years old.

Also she’s famous on Tik Tok – that’s pretty cool.

A post shared by NESSA (@nessatastic) on Jan 2, 2020 at 5:22pm PST

@NESSATASTIC

hair porn

Yes, Nessa is my hair stylist and I know that everyone thinks they’re friends with their hair stylist but I swear to god, Nessa is where it’s at in terms of hair in Vancouver.

Before going to Nessa, I had no loyalty to any particular stylist or salon and just popped in wherever could squeeze me in. It’s been about 4-5 years of seeing Nesssa and I wouldn’t trust anyone else with my hair. Not only is she crazy talented but she’s SO FUNNY. She makes sitting in a salon chair easy and I have followed her to three different salons, that’s how much I love her.

Also depending on when you go to see her, you’ll also get to see Roxi, her lovable salon pup.

@CALEIGHKATS

photography

A photographer who not only has an eye for photography but a heart of gold.

Caleigh took the photo in my about page (which is to this day, still my favourite photo of me ever), the photo I used for my influencer feature with Vita and the photo I used as my banner image for the post where I wrote about losing my job.

Caleigh has a work ethic second to none and travelling with her in New York showed me how much she loves photography. Always with a camera in hand she knows how to stop and take it all in, capture that photo and knock it out of the park every damn time.

When I first moved to Vancouver, I started blogging about the brands I’d discover at craft fairs and pop-ups. What’s so special about markets is that when you buy from a small maker, the person you’re talking to is usually the person who made it.

That’s why public events matter. Sure, I get hundreds of press releases a week—but some of the best finds are the ones that aren’t backed by PR. They’re just passionate people putting their work out there.
