BRAND FEATURE; Nettle’s Tale Clothing

Picture

There was a very raw moment for me about a year ago when I was invited to a fancy dinner party and less than 15 minutes before I had to leave I realized that the dress I picked out to wear no longer fit me. It was one of those dresses I hung on to for years due to sentimental value however never had an occasion to wear it to until I did and I could not fit into it to save my life. I couldn’t help it – I started crying immediately. Here is a dress that used to fit that I couldn’t even pretend to get on. There was no if, ands, or buts about it. This dress just did not fit. It wasn’t so much that the dress that didn’t fit that broke my heart (trust me, stuff doesn’t fit me all the time) but the fact that this was a dress that used to fit that didn’t fit anymore.
It was also too late for me to cancel going to this event so I had to borrow something from a friend and the entire time I was at this event I felt horrible, I felt insecure, I felt betrayed by my clothes and my own body. The majority of the evening was me feeling like an unattractive gloop of a human (for lack of a better word.) I think about that evening a lot because that lead to the idea of how I needed to be kinder to myself and my body. The idea that I should stop hanging on to clothes because “maybe” they’ll fit again one day because who cares if they don’t fit anymore? The only person who felt negatively about me not being a size 4 anymore was me and I needed to be a better friend to myself.
When I saw that one of my favourite swimwear brands, Nettle’s Tale, was launching a clothing line I was intrigued because the swimwear brand had always aligned with my core values when it comes to garment shopping; ethical, sustainable, body positive and inclusive.

Watching their Indiegogo funding campaign video brought me to tears because of the way Nettle’s Tale Clothing founder/designer Julia Church spoke about how we should not only be kinder to ourselves but also that our clothing should be kinder to us.
We want to create clothing that you want in good materials. This is sizing you can trust. And I think what we do isn’t rocket science, we just make stuff and we fit to the women around us.

Nettle’s Tale Clothing aims to create clothing that is more than just adaptable, it also feels like it was made for you and is advocating for you. Their campaign has already reached their $7,500 goal however you still have over 2 weeks to back this campaign and save up to 15% on the Canadian manufactured garments. Since everything is being pre-ordered you can pick your colour and your size without worry of it being sold out since your garment will be made specifically for you!

Another reason why I love supporting brands via crowdfunding pages is because of how sustainable it is. When you pre-order anything, especially from smaller ethical brands, you can help reduce the carbon footprint that is produced when brands are trying to project how many units need to be made often times leading to excess stock.

Sizing

Picture

Leave it to Nettle’s Tale to have tried their products on all types of body. Their Community Fit Guide has the measurements of over 20 women and the size they opted for in every single one of the styles available. It is refreshing to see that while some women were consistently one size throughout many of the women ranged in sizes.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, there is no such thing as standardized sizing. One of the best things I’ve ever done for myself to help get rid of fitting room angst was let go of the belief that I am always a a size whatever. Just buys what fits you and what you feel most comfortable in. I have tops that are a size extra small and I have tried on tops that are a large that barely cover my bits, stop beating yourself up over a series of letters on the tag in your clothes.

Still a little unsure of sizing? If you’re around Vancouver stop by their Gastown storefront between 11PM-8PM on Thursdays to try on any of the pieces! (330 W Cordova St.)

Styles

The basic tee
Available in two different cuts, the Strait and the Harbour, both tees are a soft blend of bamboo rayon, cotton and spandex (meaning it has stretch, but will keep its’ shape!) The Strait is your standard box-cut tee while the Harbour is slightly longer with a curved hem. Retail value $60 CAD but you save 16% if you opt to buy two tees!

The linen blouse
No summer wardrobe is complete without a linen piece (or two) in is’ rotation. Made of 100% linen both the Port Blouse and the Reserve Blouse are my two favourite pieces from the collection. The Reserve Blouse is the Port Blouse without the ruffle detail and both tops feature darting that provide room for the girls, if you know what I mean. Retail value $89 CAD however if you prebook via Indiegogo you can get it for $10 off!
The throw-on-and-go dress
Back to the bamboo rayon blend, Nettle’s Tale Clothing offers two dresses; The Lund and the Brem. I think these dress best exemplifies the brands’ commitment to adaptability because I can see these dresses working on a range of body types. The Lund can be worn with or without a belt allowing you to play around with different silhouettes while the extra full skirt allows for a flattering drape. The Brem features full length raglan sleeves with a straighter cut giving you that oversized comfort look. Retail value is $109 CAD but you save $17 on each if you buy two dresses!

The wardrobe staple (yup even for the busty gal)

I’ll be the first to admit that I have never found a button up top that fit over my bust so when I read that Nettle’s Tale fitted their Crofton button up on an E cup with no pulling whatsoever I knew that it had to be witchcraft. 100% linen that piece is the kind of classic I dreamt about having when I think of my ideal capsule collection.

I then saw a photo of the model with her hand in SIDE POCKETS and realized that Julia Church is either a witch, a genius or possibly both. Retail value is $129 CAD, $20 off if you buy it now!

The something special

I love jumpsuits. Whenever I’m wearing one people always compliment how dressed up I look but in reality if you think about it, it’s the laziest chic item of clothing you can wear. It’s literally one item of clothing you put on and you’re dressed. The Sonora jumpsuit is seriously something else made up of primarily Lyocell making it ultra soft.  I love this piece for its’ ability to be dressed down or up depending on your lifestyle. Retail value is $129 CAD but you can save 15% through Indiegogo at the moment.
