Inauguration Fits

Remember when man child, haunted puppet come to life Tucker Carlson told Teen Vogue writer Lauren Duca to stick to writing about thigh high boots? It’s shocking for some to digest, but you can be interested in both fashion and in politics. Fashion is political. It’s goes hand in hand with expression as well as stimulates and reflects the economy. So here is a quick round-ups of the fits from the 2021 inauguration with a bit of background info about the designers and the statement it makes.

(Also, I love Bernie’s look, but this post is about the girls.)

Madam Vice President Kamala Harris

The first woman sworn into office. The first Black woman sworn into office. The first Asian woman sworn into office. Whether or not you are a fan of Kamala Harris, it’s hard not to feel some kind of way seeing her raise her right hand and take that oath. Her outfit makes a strong statement about how she plans on honouring herself and her country during her time in office.

The double-breasted royal purple coat with a matching dress was designed by Brooklyn-based designer Christopher John Rogers. CJR is a Black designer that has dressed AOC and Beyonce. The choice of wearing purple is also very deliberate. Kamala Harris used purple as one of her branding colours to launch her presidential campaign. Several women attending the inauguration wore purple, the colour of the women’s suffrage movement. Purple is also a metaphor for bipartisanship – red and blue together.

Her outfit also features a David Yurman pin with the American flag, black heels, gloves and mask and a *chef kiss* pearl necklace. Pearls have become part of her signature look, a nod to her Howard University sorority. Not a single pair of Converse shoes in sight, but I’m sure we’ll be seeing her in them again soon.

First Lady Dr. Jill Biden

Dr. Jill Biden wore a stunning blue coat and dress by Alexandra O’Neill, who designs for Markarian, based in NYC. The label designs with sustainability in mind pand all of the clothing is made to order to reduce waste. This ocean blue was carefully “chosen for the pieces to signify trust, confidence, and stability,” the label said in a press statement.

Am I the only one living for the aquamarine gloves and matching mask?

Former First Lady Michelle Obama

Who gave Michelle Obama permission to look this good? In the eight years her husband was in office, the former First Lady has always put a spotlight on American designers. This plum overcoat, turtleneck, flowy trousers and an oversized belt are designed by Sergio Hudson. For her Becoming book tour, Sergio Hudson was the designer behind some of her most iconic looks including the purple pantsuit and THAT sequinned jumpsuit.

Poet Amanda Gorman

If you haven’t listened to Amanda Gorman‘s poem ‘The Hill We Climb’ please make sure you make time to listen to it. Not only is it powerful, it’s historic. At 22 years old, she is the youngest person to ever perform on inauguration day. She was recommended to perform by First Lady Dr. Jill Biden and has performed for other noteworthy women, including Hillary Clinton and Malala Yousafzai.

She is wearing a statement headband and bold yellow coat from Prada.

Other noteworthy fits

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in a Ralph Lauren pantsuit.
Lady Gaga in a Schiaparelli gown, inspiring Hunger Games comparisons for a lifetime.
J. Lo in an all white Chanel. Head to toe white is often worn by female lawmakers throughout the course of the Trump presidency.
Meena Harris in a metallic green dress from Ulla Johnson and a Coach shearling lined coat.
Ella Emhoff in an embellished plaid coat by Miu Miu layered over a Batsheva dress.

Years ago, I dreamed of becoming so “successful” that I could replace everything old or used in her house. But I’ve come to realize, she never needed anything replaced. She doesn’t want a new life. She just lets me add to hers.

Anyone who’s heard me talk about my mom knows she’s the reason I understand gratitude and compassion the way I do. She’s the original project pan queen, the real sustainability influencer in my life and she still teaches me how to make the most of what you have, every single day.

I am not a hiker. Historically, I begrudgingly agree to one hike a year—and even that is usually under 3k, with the promise of brunch after. So when I agreed to the one-day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, I knew it would be a challenge. But I didn’t realise how hard it would be. I cried out of frustration. I was mad at myself for not being fitter, for not coping better, for not moving faster.

But with the encouragement of Ale, Robert, and the incredible @intrepidtravel crew, I kept going. One shaky, slow, stubborn step at a time. And when I finally walked through the Sun Gate and saw Machu Picchu unfold in front of me? All of it—every tear, every stair, every mental spiral—felt completely worth it.

Truly one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. And yes, I now understand why men everywhere use this view as their dating profile pic. It’s iconic.

When I first moved to Vancouver, I started blogging about the brands I’d discover at craft fairs and pop-ups. What’s so special about markets is that when you buy from a small maker, the person you’re talking to is usually the person who made it.

That’s why public events matter. Sure, I get hundreds of press releases a week—but some of the best finds are the ones that aren’t backed by PR. They’re just passionate people putting their work out there.
