When it comes to dry shampoos, I am picky AF because I have dark hair and a sensitive scalp. I have definitely used dry shampoos in the past that leave my hair looking ashy and my scalp so itchy that I ended up having to wash out the dry shampoo, which totally defeats the purpose of using a dry shampoo. Dry shampoos should help also extend the life of and add a bit of volume to my hair making it ready to re-style between washes.
For me, I find too often the most effective dry shampoos are chalking, even after I brush it out. Below are my top picks for dry shampoos that work well on dark hair.
klorane dry shampoo for dark hair
A dry shampoo that I find myself repurchasing time and time again is Klorane one. I love that it’s easily accessible (available at most major drugstores!) and I always find it on sale at Shoppers. It’s Klorane’s best-selling product with one sold every nine seconds worldwide and is hypoallergenic and vegan. They have a variety of formulas for all hair types and even a non-aerosol version if that’s your thing. While they make formulas for dark hair specifically, I actually prefer the regular non-tinted because it’s that invisible!
oribe dry texturizing spray
This is my favourite spray for a hair refresh but I very rarely buy it because it’s $60. YIKES. But it works! Oribe does have a dry shampoo in its lineup, but the dry texturing spray is way better IMO. It’s a lightweight hairspray that meets a dry shampoo and helps build volume and texture while absorbing excess oil. It also smells so luxe and I love smelling like a rich lady. If my job wasn’t trying out new products all the time and I could only use one dry shampoo for the rest of my life, I would probably pick this one because OPULENCE.
evo water killer
So, I don’t actually have or have ever had this dry shampoo, but the fitness studio I get my sweat on at has the Evo Water Killer and I make a point of using it every time I’m there. It sprays so beautifully and truly leaves no residue. This spray is magic in a can because your tresses just end up looking fresh AF with no crunch, chalk or grit. I think this spray has the potential to be holy grail status for me and I will definitely pick it up the next time I am out of dry shampoo to have my own at home.
batiste divine dark
Can you have a dry shampoo round-up without mentioning Batiste? Canada’s best-selling dry shampoo and readily available at most drugstores, Batiste has dry shampoo foams and sprays, a variety of fragrances, shades and even a few that are meant to amp up the volume. While I normally find their regular formula too white for my hair, their Divine Dark is my fave hint of tint dry shampoo I’ve ever tried. Plus, I definitely use this to cheat my roots whenever my grays start to come in and I still have a few before my next colour touch-up.
bumble & bumble nourishing dry shampoo
The newest addition to my haircare lineup has been this Bumble & Bumble Nourishing Dry Shampoo. An updated addition to their lineup, this is all of the good shit that is part of their OG dry shampoo but with UV filters to help protect your hair against the drying effects of the sun and nourishes roots while absorbing oil. This bottle is a biggie and has quickly become a staple of mine. I picked her up at my last salon visit because in this summer heat your girl is greasy and her hair is oily and she needs all the help she can find.
amika perk dry shampoo.
The packaging alone is enough to make me reach for the Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo time and time again. Enriched with natural rice starch and no talc (so no white residue!) it absorbs all of my hair oily without a chalky residue and it smells like berries. Plus it leaves my hair so touchably soft and adds a bit of volume at the roots. Another thing I love about this one is that it’s available in a variety of sizes. I have a regular, jumbo, travel mini and deluxe sample!
