Sappy AF Year in Review

Picture

Welcome y’all to that weird time between Christmas and New Years where y’all are trying to fill your time before entering the new year.

It would be easy for me to say 2019 sucked. Shitty things that happened included: having to face one of my biggest fears (going to the dentist) and I actually ended up having to get a tooth extracted and all the dental work drained my saving accounts, losing my job which resulted in my imposter syndrome going into overdrive and having to cancel my trip home for the holidays since it wasn’t financially reasonable to travel, having to say goodbye to people who mean the world to me.

But this year also brought me so much joy, accomplishments, and fuck-yeah moments I want to celebrate as well so I wanted to take the opportunity to praise those things instead. If you’re wondering why I know when all this stuff happened it’s because I keep a paper agenda and take photos of fucking everything. Buckle in.

(Also, this past year I have written more consistently than I ever had before – so thank y’all for being here.)

January – March

January

  • I wrote my first piece for Vita Daily and since then have written over 47 pieces for them. This accomplishment on it’s own could be an entire dedicated post. I am so grateful to my editor, Noa, in ways I will never be able to articulate. Through Vita I’ve met so many incredible people and have been able to do so many once-in-a-lifetime things.
  • I participated in the Women’s March, once again with my former co-workers. This year with a new addition, my friends’ daughter Sloan.
  • I went to a goal setting workshop which help me gain a lot of clarity of what drives me – this was one of the first times I realized how much it weighed on me working for an industry/company driven by cheap and fast fashion.
  • I went to a DJ-ing workshop.

February

  • Ariana Grande drops a new album (I know this isn’t as personal as another but let me tell you, sis dropped ‘thank u, next’ the same week that I ended things with someone and that song was played on repeat for MONTHS.)
  • I did wardrobe for Justin Timberlake.
  • I got to sleep over at Ikea with Leslie!

March

  • I did my first Instagram takeover with Midnight Paloma!
  • I actually wrote down in my agenda that I picked up a free tote bag from Kit and Ace because I live for a free tote bag which means I also met Lillian in March!
  • I watched my sister graduate from post secondary.
  • By chance, I sat next to Nina at an event and we became friends.
  • I got my ears pierced again with Mejuri – I also got to see Siobhan the first time since graduating Blanche years ago!
  • I got my first Brazilian wax. 😐

April – June

April

  • I went to Pop Queen Cardio for the first time and met Jared!
  • I did head wardrobe for Ariana Grande and didn’t faint from sheer joy.

May

  • I met my friends’ baby girl, Nova, for the first time.
  • I did wardrobe for Carrie Underwood.
  • I did wardrobe for fucking Cher.
  • I met Manila Luzon with Joshua.

June

  • I WENT ON MY FIRST EVER PRESS TRIP!
  • I got to go to my first Bard on the Beach (I went to three different shows and was lucky enough to get to bring a plus one each time!)
  • I got to watch one of my best friends’ new boyfriend, Parker, perform drag.
  • Sloan turned one. It was pretty fucking cute.

July – September

July

  • I GOT TO GO ON ANOTHER PRESS TRIP!
  • I got to host the lifestyle stage at Khatsahlano.
  • I spent so much time in a bikini.
  • I went to Carp for the first time with Lydia. I recently realized that I have never been there without Lydia.

August

  • My friend from Lethbridge, Braeden, came to visit and I went to my first Vancouver Pride and got really drunk at Numbers.
  • I went to Tight Club for the first time.
  • I did that thing I always say I’m going to do but never do – I participated in a beach clean-up with OCIN.
  • I got to see Carly Rae Jepsen! I did cry for a lot of it because I was already kind of sad and then I decided to also drink and the combination of the two was not the best thing I’ve ever done.
  • Oh yeah, I also turned 30.

September

  • I got to go to NYC for Nina’s birthday. This was also my first ever vacation as an adult and we had pizza every day.
  • I also got to attend NYFW shows and after parties!
  • I went to Abbotsford and stomp grapes with my feet!
  • I got to attend a Men Who Take Baths party, panel discussion and live interview. The night was transformative in the best way and I will never be able to recapture such a beautiful moment. If you ever have a chance to go, I highly recommend it, even if (or maybe especially if) you don’t know another single person there.
  • I got to meet my Instagram friend, Stefan, IRL!

October – December

October

  • I got to take a tour of the Lush HQ which means this is also the month that I met and became friends with Meagan.
  • I was the Vita Daily featured influencer of the month!
  • I had the privilege of attending the Canucks home opener in a deluxe suite! This was so special to me because growing up my brother and dad loved hockey. It was one of the few things they had in common. We grew up so poor so my dad would have to save up money to take my brother to games occasionally and I remember him always reassuring me that not bringing me didn’t mean he loved me any less. It was just that we couldn’t afford to take all the kids and it was really more of my brother’s thing. It never upset me but being able to sit in these prime seats and watch the game was one of those “fuck yeah” moments.
  • My friend, Chloe, hosting a friendsgiving and it gave me the opportunity to reconnect with an old friend.
  • I got to participate in Plenty of Plates – a worth wild cause, if you ever have a chance to do it, do it. You will not regret it. Also this means that October is when I met Josh!
  • I went to Seasons in the Park for the first time which means this is also the month when I met my friend Michelle! This night also meant a lot to me since it was the day I lost my job and got to have a fancy comfort meal and ran into a friend, Katie – it was just what I needed after a shit day.
  • I met my friends’ son, Kaleo, for the first time.
  • I got to attend the Climate March with Xanthe.

November

  • I did my first paid Instagram ad.
  • I went on another press trip! This time I got to bring Michael.
  • I started the Tight Exchange program at Tight Club.
  • Disney+ came out and that did a lot for my unemployment game.
  • I met the gals behind Today Denim, via Bumble Bizz of all things!
  • I saw Vallea Lumina for the first time. Wow, wow ,wow. What an experience.
  • I went behind the scenes of Luzia and got to try some trapeze tricks!

December

  • I got to go to Cirque du Soleil with Chloe.
  • Nordstrom sent me to Boney M, another nostalgic hit in the feels. Growing up my parents had a box full of Vietnamese cassette tapes and the only one they had in english was the Boney M holiday album so I would listen to it year round.
  • I went to go see Star Wars and it only made me cry twice. If you’ve seen it let me know and we can discuss it more because I have a lot of thoughts, questions and concerns.
  • LATE ADDITION: As I’m writing (Christmas Eve) this I just checked my Instagram to find out that Miranda just had her first daughter.
  • EXTRA LATE ADDITION: I woke up on Christmas day to find out that my Instagram friend, turned friend IRL, Cam, just had her baby!

Bonus

  • I was able to form a new wonderful group of friends that I affectionately refer to as my band of misfits – it’s hard to imagine a version of me that doesn’t include Xanthe, Lydia, Hannah, Mikey and Matt. (Matt Osborn, you do not get lumped into this group because I sunk my claws into you early.)
  • I have also watched some of my best friends become mothers this past year and I cannot not even begin to express in words how rewarding it has been.
  • Friends have moved away to follow their passions and as much as I miss them I love seeing them thrive.
  • I was also recently telling a friend about how I’ve never been on a bad date. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been on plenty of boring dates, but none that are bad. This trend continued this year and I went on some really great first dates in 2019.
  • Also, special shout out to all the brands and PR firms I work with year round. I am so lucky to have such great relationships with some of y’all and I couldn’t work with a better bunch of peeps.
  • I have been absolutely astonished by the overwhelming kindness that has been shown to me, especially when I lost my job. People who I didn’t think cared about me reached out and the support was almost overwhelming. I am honestly getting a bit misty-eyed just thinking about how much your kindness has meant to me the past few months.

The fine print: I will be the first to admit, always, that I am one of the luckiest people in the world. Through my writing and blogging gig a lot of these experiences have been made available to me and it would be foolish of me to think I could have the same experiences without my side hustle.
