SUBSCRIPTION BOX; Jiyubox Fall 2019

Picture

I’m back with another Jiyubox subscription box mini review because I am a consistent blogger until I decide to get a job. Which won’t be for a while if I’m being honest. SO HERE WE ARE. Should I turn being unemployed into a regular topic here on the blog? Would it work? (Pun intended.) Anyhow, getting a bit off topic here so lets go back to the subscription box.

The theme for this season is all things cozy, perfect for fall and featuring all PNW based brands!

If you haven’t read my first Jiyubox review yet you can read it here. Before we delve in, please know that this box was gifted to me but all thoughts and opinions are my own! I am also under no obligation to post in exchange for product but I have always loved to share natural beauty brands.

The Products

SCHMEARNATURALS Rosehip + Sea Buckthorn Antioxidant Face Oil ($34 CAD retail)
Prior to receiving this face oil I had no experience with sea buckthorn oil but this facial oil has made me a fan of this superstar ingredient. While rosehip oil adds a ton of moisture while reducing inflammation and hyperpigmatation, sea buckthorn oil helps stimulate skin regeneration. I used 3-4 drops as a pre-moisturizer and just gently pressed it into my skin.

BONUS: This box also came with a deluxe sized sample of the Schemearnaturals’ Turmeric + Coconut Face Mask. When added with equal parts water it turned into a creamy consistency and the coconut milk and honey made the mask ultra calming. I know what you’re all wondering, no it did not turn my face yellow. That is always the first thing I’m worried about when using turmeric products too. (It did slightly stain my mask brush.)

WOODLOT Fresh Face Exfoliant ($28 CAD retail)
This exfoliant reminded me so much of a long-lost-love of mine, the Fable Naturals face exfoliant. Perfect for sensitive skin types this scrub is not abrasive and with a little bit of water turns into a gentle scrub. I added a couple of facial oil drops to add some extra moisture but fret not this exfoliant is not drying! Bonus: no microbeads used and safe to rinse down the drain afterwards.

PLENTY + SPARE SOAPS When Skies are Grey Soap Bar ($9 CAD retail)
Aptly named “When Skies are Grey” this soap is the perfect pick me up during this rainy weather. Handmade with lavender and lemongrass oil this soap combines two of my favourite scents into an uplifting and bubbly blend sure to perk you up always. I am mindful of the fact that being a beauty writer causes my carbon footprint to be larger than most so I make an effort to use bar soaps as often as possible and the fact that it’s made just down the street from my apartment is an added bonus!

NOOTKA & SEA Desert Rose & Sage Herbal Buttercream ($24 CAD retail)
This brand was the one brand from the box that I had never heard of prior to receiving this buttercream. Botanically crafted and based in Squamish, this lotion is a heavy-hitter. Extremely moisturizing this was great for post shave and when my skin was feeling extra scale-y. It is very appropriately named “buttercream” because this lotion is thick and a small amount goes a long way! This is probably my new favourite winter skin saver.

MIDNIGHT PALOMA Detox Mask Kit ($18 CAD retail)
What can I say about the Midnight Paloma face mask that I haven’t said countless times before? I have gone through two full jars of the mask and tell everyone I can about their free detox mask promo (you can get it here!) For $6.99 you can get this exact same kit of three mask samples and a mask brush.

The Value

Picture

The retail value of the fall box I received is $113 CAD for 5 items. I like that the box comes with a little info card with all the brands, products and costs listed so that I can determine if I think the value is there per item and contemplate the costs of repurchasing the items again if I enjoyed them.

You have three options when it comes to subscribing to Jiyubox and each box comes with 4 to 6 full size products. For the purpose of breaking down the costs I will go with the average 5 items per delivery.

  • Best value is the ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTION is $293.20 CAD for 4 boxes ($73.30/box, $14.66/item)
  • Alternatively you can subscription for a SEASONAL SUBSCRIPTION for $78.54 CAD ($15.71/item) which auto-renews every 3 months. Note there is no contract and commitment so you can cancel before your next payment is scheduled!
  • If you want to opt for the ONE TIME PURCHASE the cost is $85.08 CAD ($17.02/item)

If you want to save an additional 10% off use code VICKI10 at checkout. This is just a discount code for y’all and makes me no commission whatsoever.

The Verdict

I love the value you get with the Jiyubox and this season is one of my favourites! I love learning about local brands, always, and getting a box full of new goodies is such a great way to be introduced to them. I had tried Woodlot candles, Midnight Paloma and some Plenty + Spare products before but with the exception of the face mask all the products were new to me.

Again, I recognize that this box is a bit on the pricey side but the value speaks for itself, plus you get to support a local female-run business all about introducing people to clean beauty! A great gift for the upcoming holiday season!

I’ve always believed the spaces we spend time in a I’ve always believed the spaces we spend time in affect how we feel and work.

Rove Kyoto feels less like a traditional coworking space and more like somewhere you actually want to spend your day.

Inspired by Japanese minimalism, the design-forward space is built around calm and focused work environments, with warm wood, soft lighting, thoughtful details, quiet corners, and pieces from the Rove Concepts Kyoto Collection throughout, including standing desks that somehow make answering emails feel slightly more zen.

And on weekends, the space shifts into something entirely different: a lounge experience centred around matcha and Japanese-inspired hospitality.

Last June, I went on a life-changing trip to Peru Last June, I went on a life-changing trip to Peru with @intrepidtravel . We did the big adventures, like walking up to the Sun Gates at Machu Picchu, exploring the Amazon, and connecting with the local community.

But beyond the adventure, the trip also created a meaningful impact. It’s easy to think travel is just about what you take from a place. But sometimes, it’s also about what your presence gives back.

A simple lunch at AMA in the Sacred Valley turned into something more. Not just because it was a great meal, but because of the people behind it, mothers building a livelihood while caring for their kids, and a space that supports both.

That’s what makes trips like this feel so meaningful. The experiences stay with you, but so do the people, and the small ways your visit contributes.

That’s what The Intrepid Effect looks like to me: responsible travel that creates a positive effect in the local community long after I head home. What does it look like to you?

It might sound cheesy, but people cheering for you actually does help. I’m also so grateful to the @runasyouare community for not only supporting me through my race but their open invite to be a part of their cheer squad year after year. Tell me who else is going to book a DJ and a choir for a cheering station?!
